Second lawsuit filed against Pete Newman, Kanakuk; family of abused Texas child also names Joe White as defendant

A lawsuit filed in federal District Court for the Northern District of Texas says Kanakuk President Joe White kept Pete Newman on staff working with children even after 1999 and 2003 incidents in which Newman was cavorting in the nude with the children.

Newman is serving two life sentences, plus 30 years, after pleading guilty last year to several sex crimes involving teenage boys.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a Texas child by his parents. The father of the child says White,a nationally known Christan motivational speaker, encouraged him to send his son to Kanakuk Kamp in Branson following a speech at a Promise Keepers meeting in Irving, Texas.

"Defendant Joe T. White appeared and lectured at a Promise Keepers event at Texas Stadium in Irvin Texas. (The father) attended this event and heard (his) presentation advocating Christian values." White spoke of Kanakuk Kamp and distributed literature, and later sent letters and Internet messages to him, his wife, and other parents encouraging them to send their children to the Missouri camp.

When their son was sent to the camp, the lawsuit said, Pete Newman, the camp director, sexually molested him, "appearing nude with an erection in a hot tub for Bible studies with (the boy) as Newman masturbated himself, he masturbated (the boy) and had the boy masturbate him."

The abuse also included games of naked truth or dare, and having the boy spend the night in Newman's living quarters, where he was sexually abused.

"At other times, Defendant Newman's inappropriate behavior and sexual abuse of (the boy) occurred in the presence of other Kanakuk Kamp personnel." The child was in the camp during the summers of 2005-2007. The lawsuit also names Kanakuk Ministries, Kanakuk Kamp, and every other name by which Kanakuk has been called as defendants.

"Newman used his position at Kanakuk Kamps as a means to abuse children such as John Doe I (as the boy is referred to throughout the petition) by developing the children's trust and friendship. This, coupled with Newman's mantle of authority as a dircctor of Kanakuk Kamps, allowed Newman to sexually abuse and molest multiple boys through masturbation, oral sex, and sodomy."

The lawsuit charges that White and Kanakuk Ministries "had every reason to know Newman, a sexual predator, was operating freely in the Kanakuk Kamps and placing young boys at risk for sexual abuse and molestation and the lifelong burdens that childhood sexual abuse creates."

The petition goes into specifics about White's prior knowledge of Newman's perversions:

"At least as early as 1999, Defendant Joe T. White, Kanakuk Ministries and/or Kanakuk Heritage, Inc. knew that Newman, in the nude, was riding four-wheelers at the 'kamp' with nude 'kampers,' who were minor children entrusted to the care of Defendants. In response to this sexually inappropriate behavior, Newman was placed on probation."

That was not the last time Newman's perverted antics were known to White and Kanakuk officials, the lawsuit charges. "In or about 2003, a nude Defendant Newman was streaking through the 'kamp' property with nude minor 'kampers.' Although this conduct came to the attention of Defendants Joe T. White, Kanakuk Ministries, and/or Kanakuk, Heritage, Inc., again Newman remained on staff in easy reach of his future victims, including John Doe I."

The petition charges White and Kanakuk officials with negligence in allowing Newman anywhere near children. John Doe I "suffered injuries that have required and will continue to require medical and psychological care. The childhood sexual abuse of John Doe I in the context of what was purported to be Christian ministry further complicates his injuries and treatment.

White and Kanakuk are also charged with fraud, misrepresentation, and unfair and deceptive practices, negligent infliction of emotional distress. The parents are asking for medical expenses, punitive damages, and attorneys' fees and are requesting a jury trial.

The petition indicates they are asking for a figure "in excess of $75,000."

The parents and son are being represented by the Turley Law Firm of Dallas.

The lawsuit is the second to be filed against Newman and Kanakuk, and the first to be filed against Joe White individually.

The first lawsuit, filed Jan. 31 in Taney County Circuit Court, charges officials at the Christian sports camp Kanakuk with fraud for allowing Pete Newman to masquerade as a role model at the same time he was molesting scores of underage boys. The petition was filed on behalf of a Little Rock man who was only 12 years old when Newman allegedly began grooming him.

Among the allegations in that petition:

-Kanakuk officials had received sexual misconduct reports about Pete Newman as early as 1999. (He remained in Kanakuk's employ until 2009.)

-Kanakuk's cost-saving policies encouraged employees recruiting campers in the off-season to stay with families, providing opportunities for Newman to zero in on potential victims.

-Kanakuk promoted Newman as a "camp director, devoted husband, loving, beloved friend and mentor to youth" long after being made aware of sexual misconduct allegations. Camp officials also allowed Newman to "continue to promote himself all over America as an expert on teenage sexual purity."

-Newman had one-on-one Bible studies with boys in his hot tub.

-Newman used his unrestricted access to Kanakuk facilities to lure underage boys to the facilities during the off-season for sexual purposes.

-Newman bombarded the plaintiff, referred to as "John Doe, J. G." in the petition with phone calls and letters and engaged in phone sex with him.

-Newman had sexual relations with boys in Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. (Not mentioned was Colorado where Newman, who is currently serving two life sentences plus 30 years in a Missouri penitentiary, still faces charges.)

-At a "Purity Conference" in Memphis, Newman engaged a group of boys in sex talk, telling them what it was like to "have sex with a woman now that he was married."

-Newman invited the plaintiff to a conference in Oklahoma where he tried to get the boy to engage in sodomy, was turned down, and finally convinced him to engage in a mutual masturbation session.

According to the petition, the plaintiff was first seduced by Newman on Feb. 7, 2003, and then again the following day at K-Kountry in Taney County, at an area known as "The Pit," a foam pit next to the gymnastics equipment.

In the summer of 2003, the petition says, Newman lured the children with a yellow jeep into "spending time with him on Kanakuk property."

During the Purity Conference in Tennessee in 2004, Newman again engaged in a mutual masturbation session with the boy and then took advantage of him at the conference in Oklahoma in 2005, according to the lawsuit.

Kanakuk officials and Newman are charged with fraud, negligent supervision of a minor, breach of fiduciary duty, negligent infliction of emotional damage, breach of duty in loco parentis (serving in place of the parents) and negligent infliction of emotional distress.

The petition indicates the plaintiff suffers from "severe depression and ongoing anxiety and that he is "psychologically confused and spiritually damaged by a person promoted to him by Kanakuk as a fole model."

The plaintiff in the Missouri case is asking for a jury trial.

I hope as part of the damages inflicted on the "Kamp" by the Court will be the closing of the Kamp for good. PERIOD. Never reopen or be in the Kamp business again.

It is about time that the truth will be brought to light. It is hard to comprehend how Pete was allowed to continue working with kids after being caught running around with them naked. Not once but twice, as far as we know.

I do not know of a single church that would of tolerated this kind of behavior. Why did Joe allow this and what justification was used to rationalize his continued employment. The sad part is I understand that the executive staff was in agreement to just put him on probation.

If that is the case, are kids still in jeopardy today? What is the true thinking process of all of the directors and would Joe White allow his grandkids to run around naked with Pete? If so, what does his daughter thinkk about that.

The day Joe white chose to keep Pete on the payroll, knowing of his inappropriate sexual behavior with kampers, he sent a clear message to his entire staff; that he will accept and tolerate such behavior. WOW.

From my understanding Joe is a very powerful and influential person in the Branson area, and people are afraid of him and that is why nothing else has been done to discover how deep this really goes.

If that is the case, this boy is David and Joe White is Goliath. we all know how that story ended.

Good luck kid. I pray you find out the truth and find healing some day.

Randy and I have covered this case from the beginning and I was in the courtroom when Pete Newman was sentenced.

It gave me a relly ewwww moment when Newman told the judge, "My heart beats for kids."

Joe White KNEW what was going on with Newman in 1999 and decided to promote him, instead of fire him, when he was witnessed at the camp riding naked on four wheelers with young boys who were also naked.

Then we have the 2003 incident where Newman and a group of young boys “streaked” through the camp. White and other leaders at the “Kamp” continued to not only let Newman pray with young boys…but prey on them as well.

The problem I have with White and Kanakuk is that they continued to employ Newman for years (even sending him to stay in the homes of some of the boys he molested to recruit other kampers) AFTER they had him sign a probationary agreement acknowledging his inappropriate behavior with young boys all in the name of PROFIT…not a Prophet!

AND, in 2009, when they absolutely knew what had happened and had let Pete go, they did not tell the parents of upcoming 2008 kampers what had happened, That is like an airline covering up a plane crash so as not to lose business during busy season. Parents should have had enough info provided to make their own determinations about whether or not to send their kids given that there had been such a colossal management failure.

It is interesting to read comments about this case from people who know nothing about Joe White or Kanakuk and who masquerade as journalists. Just because you have a job as a writer does not mean that you are a good one. I work with journalists at the national and international level, including reporters from WSJ, NYT, ABC News, NBC, CBS, BBC, etc., etc., etc. My rolodex includes direct lines to every nightly newscaster. I've appeared on Fox, CNN, MSNBC, NBC, CBS and ABC. That is my field, so I am completely comfortable calling out Randy and Kathie on their "top notch" skills as journalists. Here is where you both fail as journalists. . .you fail to maintain any objectivity about the story. Instead of reporting the story, you state your opinions and draw on information from a nut job in Dallas who thinks that Pete should have been fired because her daughter said Pete was a homosexual. Anyone with any common sense knows that you cannot fire a person based on what a 12 year old girl thinks regarding sexual orientation.

First, Joe is powerful, but no one would cover for a child molester and to say such is just pure stupidity and ignorance. Do I think that they made an extremely poor decision in allowing Pete to stay on staff? Yes. Should they financially pay for this? Yes.

The district attorney in Branson did not file criminal charges against Joe or the camp because there was no evidence showing they committed a crime. Period. Did this poor judgment hurt many kids? Sadly, yes. And I am sure that those poor decisions will haunt Joe until the day he days - - which, as many of you would say, deservedly so. This is not what I feel because I do believe in the grace of God who is kind and compassionate.

Should the victims get their day in court? Yes.

Legally neither Joe nor Kanakuk could have spoken about Pete in any degree before the prosecutor charged Pete. Anyone who states otherwise has no idea what they are talking about.

Does the camp need to be shut down? No

Was this a grand conspiracy? No. Prove it.

Did they keep Pete on for profit? No. You cannot prove this because Joe White is the one who is the money maker for camp. While Pete spoke at conferences and retreats, he did not come close to the drawing power of Joe who has spoken in front of hundreds of thousands and on national radio repeatedly.

Randy and Kathee - - for the sake of journalism, please strive to be truthful and objective. Show some integrity since you so commonly complain against the lack of it with Kanakuk. Hold yourself to the same standards.

Interesting how when this story first broke, those of us whose children/families were directly affected by this and posted our experiences were chewed and spit out by all the people on here who said we were lieing and did not know what we were taling about and Kanakuk is the best thing since sliced bread and there is NO WAY Joe knew anything and on and on and on...Just wondering if any of you, and there were PLENTY of you on here a year ago- What exactly is your take now that the truth is coming out in a court of law. Any change of heart yet????

I went to kanakuk camps when i was little, This is the kind of man that i thought was my "childhood hero" It hurts to see that all of this happened, Joe White was also a role model for me, to see that he knew all of this was happening breaks my heart...

You don't know a single church??? How about an entire religious sect??? HELLO CATHOLISISM...

All I have to say is just because a horrible man, Pete Newman, claimed to be a Christian and was seen as a role model, but turned out to be a child molester, does not mean that all Christians are hypocrites, and the religion is flawed. Men who claimed to be devout Muslims flew 2 planes into the World Trade Center, and 1 into the Pentagon in acts of terrorism, but that does not mean all Muslims are terrorist, and you are ignorant if you think otherwise. I have known Joe White and his family for a couple of years, and I went to Kanakuk as a camper for 3 years at K-Kountry when Pete Newman was a counselor, and I am being so truthful when I say Joe White would never knowingly subject children to such a monster. What you people forget is hindsight is always 20/20. Pete was charismatic and sadly the perfect child molester, and I mean that with the up-most repulsion. He was that guy that myself, my parents, other counselors, and other campers would have never suspected of being capable of such a thing. Every cabin always had AT LEAST 2 counselors, so you would think if it was SOOO obvious and Joe White should have known, then at the very least so would the young adults counseling alongside of him.

The reason he didn't get fired for the 4-wheeler incident is because he was able to convince everyone that they were just being funny, and it was a "boy thing". Yeah, it was inappropriate, but a lot of things boys do at that age is inappropriate. That stuff is passed off as boys being boys, bad judgement on Pete's part, and boys always thinking it is funny to run around naked. Joe did not want to see that someone he trusted was filled with so much evil. Also, you have to know children told their parents about the streaking, or four-wheeler incident, so why wasn't there objection and concern voiced then from the parents of the children in his cabin/ that he was doing it with? Probably because the boys downplayed it just as Pete was able to do. If a parent had filed a complaint or sought immediate action, something would have been done. You are an absolute idiot to think that Joe knowingly misrepresented Pete's character. Just as women don't pick up on their husbands, brothers, fathers, boyfriends, etc. disgusting behavior until it has been spelled out to them, Joe didn't want to see this of his best friend and brother in Christ.

My sister is a counselor there this summer, and they went to almost 2 full weeks of training and spent more than half their time going through completely new policies in terms of counselor-camper interactions. My sister can't even run one of her campers to the restroom without another adult/counselor being with her. The camp will do everything in its power to never let such a horrible thing happen again. Joe White lectured for 8 hours about the details of the situation, and the guilt he will forever feel for this happening to the children and their families who trusted him.

All of you who want the camp shut down, are completely unaware of the positive impacts that it has had on so many other counselors and campers alike. I have never seen a place where so many people experience the love for God and growth as a young person that is learned and taught there. I hate that this happened, and I am truly at a loss for all the families that were effected. My heart breaks for your children, and I pray for their healing, but I also pray that you are able to forgive Joe. You and your boys NEVER invited such a thing, and in no way is this your children's or your own fault. I couldn't possibly understand your anger, and I acknowledge that it is justified, but place the blame on the man who deserves it, Pete. Don't be consumed with hate for Joe. That is all I have to say.

I will always be praying for Pete and that he heals from this horrible thing he has done.

Remember that we all fall short of the glory of god. Pete may have messed up big time, but all sin is the sane through Gods eyes.

As a childhood sexual abuse victim myself and personally finding full and complete healing in Jesus Christ alone, I want to reach out to the victims and their familiies. I am praying for all involved. God and God alone has the power to heal broken hearts, broken minds, and broken souls. He provided the way through Jesus Christ...the Only Way...He is the God of all comfort, He binds up the broken hearted and heals their wounds, He is the healer of my soul, and He alone can restore a soul. Our soul is our mind, our will, and our emotions. To find TRUE healing, not just for sexual abuse victims, but s"I"n victims, pr"I"de victims, and "SELF" victims (of which includes the entire human race), we have to fix our eyes on Jesus. The TRUTH is we ALL need Him because we ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). The Bible also says, "For the wages of sin is death; BUT the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." (Romans 6:23). When you work at a job, you earn wages. Well, the Bible says that what we earn for our sin is death, BUT (and I thank God for that BUT...) the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. In Romans 5:8, the Bible says that "But God demonstrates his love toward us, in that, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." The Bible gives so much hope in "That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart man believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." (Romans 10:9-10) I want anyone reading this to understand that hope, forgiveness, healing, and everything else we truly need is found in Christ alone. Yes the consequences of sin are devastating - someone else's and our own. But forgiveness, both Christ forgiving you, and His forgiveness flowing through you to someone else...is a powerful healer. I did not understand that unforgiveness keeps us hooked to the past in anger, hurt, bitterness, resentment, etc. When you are hooked to the past with unforgiveness, you can't move forward to the plans God has for you. I have learned that to forgive is not really for the other person...it is for YOU!!! And it really does not matter how the other person responds, it frees you from being held captive to the past so you can move forward...Forgiving is like saying..."I am "for - giving" you up to God who will be your just Judge." That lets you off the hook of the past, but it does not allow them off Almighty God's hook!!! Every person will have to stand before God and give an account of their life and the choices they have made. I wanted to reccommend some resources that truly changed my life...The Bible, Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan (helped me grow spiritually), Bondage Breaker by Neil T. Anderson (helped me in the healing process), Lord Foulgrin's Letters by Randy Alcorn (helped me understand the spiritual battle), and Heaven by Randy Alcorn (helped me visualize my REAL home more clearly than I had ever seen it before... I pray that God will help others find healing in Him too!!! WARNING: You will find all manner of distractions (both in thoughts and circumstances) trying to keep you from reading any of the above materials.

I just dont understand how pete could do something like that. It really has my trust for him GONE. the only reason i went to Kanakuk kamps was because of pete and katie. but now i can say katie is the one that gave me awesome inspiration. After going to the Kamp and working at the Kamp, total time there being 12 years I actually think Joe didnt know because you have to realize that there are 11 different Kamps all at separate locations. If you actually want facts Joe works in Lampe MO while pete worked in Branson MO. To take the blame to Joe white is ridiculous since there is no clear evidence that he knew about the incident. People got their revenge to be honest the Kamp has nothing to do with the problem as a whole. Basically the people are suing Joe white however since its a corporation the kamp will continue to run regardless what happens to joe.

really i went to that camp from 93 to 2003 and after reading all of this i remember all that stuff happening at that place always hated it there i hope they do shut that place down and shut down any other kanp that is offiliated with kanakuk
